A bill allowing Operation UNITE to continue providing uninterrupted services to communities through mid-year will be introduced January 22, 2008, in the Kentucky Senate. Senate Bill 97 would allocate $450,000 from a $12 million pool of money in the Multi County Economic Regional Development Fund, which is comprised of revenue from the coal severance tax, Sen. Robert Stivers (R-Manchester) told approximately 120 coalition representatives from across UNITE’s service region Monday.

Operation UNITE coalition volunteers and students from across the Fifth Congressional District were honored Friday, November 9, 2007, for outstanding efforts during the past year. More than 800 people attended the program, held at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.

Youth Summit/Club Awards 2007 (98)
Regional winners for the elementary, middle and high school UNITE Club of the Year and UNITE substance abuse counselor of the year awards, were recognized Wednesday and Thursday, August 29-30, during “Uniting To Serve” youth summits held at The Center For Rural Development and Mountain Arts Center.

“Here in Eastern Kentucky, we’ve had hundreds of people lose their lives to drug abuse because they made poor choices,” Fifth District Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers told more than 1,500 youth and adult sponsors from 89 schools in 24 counties attending the awards presentations. “Your work is important because you can influence your friends and family to make good choices and to believe in themselves.”

Speakers included Marla Montell, Kentucky Commissioner for the Department of Human Support Services, Cabinet for Health and Family Services; Melissa Newton, Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service Program Training Officer; and Karen Engle, executive director Operation UNITE.

More than 200 people representing all UNITE counties attended a press conference in Frankfort to support pending anti-drug legislation. The event was held in the Capitol Rotunda. Featured speakers were: Governor Ernie Fletcher; UNITE Executive Director Karen Engle; Rogers Elemenetary UNITE Club president Marcus Kidd; Justice Cabinet Secretary Gen. Norman Arflack; Kentucky Senators Dan Kelly, Ray Jones and Robert Stivers; former Rhode Island Senator Tom Coderre; and Attorney General Greg Stumbo.

Operation UNITE and the EKU AmeriCorps program brought 350 students and counselors and other school officials together on Monday, May 1, 2006, at The Center For Rural Development in Somerset to focus on drug awareness and abuse issues and learn how they can become involved in prevention efforts in Southeastern Kentucky.
